Out in the real world news is happening and here are the highlights.
McDonald’s former CEO argues against minimum wage
Talk of raising minimum wage to $15 an hour in some American states –roughly double of what workers in North Carolina and in many other parts of the country earn right now– has prompted former McDonald’s CEO, Edward Rensi, to argue that it will only lead to human beings being replaced by robots. – Washington Post.
Indonesia to begin castrating sex offenders
Indonesia consistently makes headlines for ruthlessly executing handfuls of Western drug offenders every year. Now, the country’s legal system is going to get even more medieval after approving castration as a potential punishment for convicted sex offenders. It will be chemical castration, though, which is totally neo-medieval rather than plain archaic. – New York Times.
ExxonMobil says ending oil production is “unacceptable for humanity”
Despite slowly murdering us and himself, ExxonMobil CEO, Rex Tillerson, told an annual company meeting in Dallas that cutting off oil production is “unacceptable for humanity” because renewable energy can’t meet the world’s current energy demands. But rather than perhaps suggesting humanity change its consumption habits, Rex thinks we should just shrug things off as they are and keep on drilling. – The Guardian.
Paypal founder funding Hulk Hogan’s suit against Gawker
Peter Thiel, co-founder of Paypal, really is the sort of guy to hold a grudge. After being outed as gay by Gawker nine years ago, the billionaire swore revenge, and is doing so by funding Hulk Hogan’s crippling lawsuit against the gossip site that also published his sex tape. While it’s hard to feel particularly sympathetic for Gawkerspecifically, maybe we should start mourning free speech. – Slate.
Israeli team develops 3D bio-printer for stem cells
Two Israeli firms have developed a 3D bio-printer capable of manufacturing stem cells – borderline magical cells capable of replenishing adult tissue. This development means that we’re potentially not far away from printing complex tissues and organs using the same technology. Insane. – The Stack.

The Cleveland Cavaliers trounced the Toronto Raptors by a 116-78 scoreline, taking a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference playoff finals. One more win will take them through to the final, where it looks like they’ll face Oklahoma City Thunder, who lead 3-1 against the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference final. –ESPN.
